Chapter 24

I make it to the gazebo, and from there, to my hut. The shades hesitate at my appearance, only fully peeling themselves away from the wall when I indicate I’m ready for my robes.

“But you’re… dirty,” one shade says.

“And what about your crown?” another asks.

I glance at my pants, and the long-sleeved shirt I pulled from the dresser drawer in my room at Habonde’s. I have no idea who the shirt belongs to. “Don’t I have a change of clothes here? And isn’t there a spare crown or two for emergencies?”

One shade darts off, returning with a floaty nightgown similar to the ones my friends and I were just wearing at the rites. “Will this do?”

“Sure.” I shuck my pants, pull off the shirt, and slide my arms into the sleeves. The shade pulls the soft gown over my head, and I watch as the hem settles around my dirty toes.

A second shade disappears, then reappears, a crude iron crown in her translucent hand. She places it on my head. The metal smells old, and like it hasn’t been handled in ages. Sharp bits poke my scalp.

I don’t mind, I think, as the third shade helps me into my robe and draws the generous hood up and over the crown. The physical discomfort will keep me alert, keep me from wallowing in the emotional soup sloshing around inside me.
